The Fence is Up!

June 4, 2007
Hi Everybody, I just got back from a pretty productive week at Old Salem. The fence is up! Frank Rust had done us the kindness of dozing around the perimiter of the cemetery so that we could install our fence with as little trouble as possible.

I was there by myself on Memorial Day and Tuesday, laying out fence lines, digging postholes, setting corners and line posts, gates, and learning all about how not to cut trees down. Remind me to tell you about that sometime. The weather was pleasant, the ticks were few and the cemetery was very peaceful. I recruited some inmate labor for the last three days, and with their help, we were able to do some landscaping in addition to the fence.

Howard Walker was able to help on Thursday, and my Dad had finally caught up with his hay raking and rolling so he joined us on Thursday and Friday. I'm deeply grateful for their experience - my Dad especially, for anticipating and furnishing all of the supplies and tools that we needed to get the job done. He's a wonder with a chainsaw, too. Progress! You'll find more photos in the gallery.

Website Makeover

April 11, 2007

Shirley Lyons mentioned to me not long ago that my email address on the site wasn't sending mail through. Looking into the problem, I learned that Namesecure, the registrar of saveoldsalem.org and the company with which our domain is parked, decided last November not to offer the email redirection service any longer. I didn't get the memo.

I decided that it's time to tighten things up a bit anyway, so I went ahead and bought us a year's worth of web hosting with A2 Web Hosting, and I'm very pleased. There was a brief transitional period while I copied files to the new host, but we're up and running as before. Better than before, actually.

I needed better tools to make updates easier (and faster), so I did a little research into free / open-source content management systems, and I decided to give TYPO3 a try.  I think it's a really good CMS, and if I can learn even 1/10th of what it has to offer, we'll be in very good shape.  If you notice any small cosmetic differences throughout the site, it's likely that it stems from this transition.

Fence Purchased!

March 20, 2007

1/2 an acre is a lot of land, so we've purchased a lot of fence to go around it.

I want to extend a very big thank-you to my Dad who was instrumental in shopping around, asking the right questions, and going to pick it up for us, saving delivery costs.

Knowing our purposes, Mr. Stutts of Newcastle Supply Co. was willing to offer the fence at a considerable discount. In addition, the materials he provided were of better quality than his competitors. What more could we possibly ask for? I encourage anyone with fencing needs to contact him directly:

Ok, so, is anyone handy with post-hole diggers?
